Doctors may have flu shot surplus:

Reduced demand eases fears of vaccine shortage

After weeks of high anxiety over a shortage of flu vaccine, demand has died down so much that doctors may have some left over at the end of the season.
‘‘It seems that there is now more supply than demand,'' Weymouth Health Director Richard Marino said.

But a top state health official said some health care providers still don't have enough vaccine.

If health officials manage to correct the ‘‘maldistribution,'' director of infectious diseases Dr. Al DeMaria said, ‘‘I think it's ultimately going to be used up one way or another.''

The state has already distributed 655,000 doses to local health boards, hospitals, nursing homes and doctors, and expects to receive an additional 32,000 doses, a spokeswoman said.

Even without the future shipment, the total is more than the 630,000 shots the Department of Public Health ordered for this year. (continued)
